You might be surprised to know that general tickets also have validity. After purchasing the ticket, you can travel using it within the stipulated time.

Railways (Indian Railways) has set a deadline to start the journey to stop the trick of traveling throughout the day on unreserved tickets. Earlier, due to the rule of no time restriction, tickets were being misused.

Due to this, Railways was facing huge financial loss. To stop this, Railways fixed the deadline for general tickets in 2016.

General ticket is valid for 3 hours

Indian Railways rules say that if you have to travel up to 199 kilometers, you have to catch the train within 3 hours of purchasing a general ticket.

However, for distances of 200 kilometers or more, general tickets can be purchased 3 days in advance. If a passenger takes a ticket for a journey of less than 199 kilometres,

So, he will have to start his journey till the first train leaves the station where he has to go or within 3 hours of purchasing the ticket.

You may have to pay a fine

Now, if a passenger travels on a ticket purchased for a journey up to 199 kilometers after three hours of purchasing it, the Railways is entitled to treat him as without a ticket and charge a fine.

If the journey does not start for 3 hours, the passenger can neither cancel the ticket nor can travel on it in any other train.
