Apple alleges that some employees worked with non-profit organizations to fraudulently increase the amount of donations. In this program, employees pretended that they were making donations, but in reality they got these donations back from the charities, and the employees kept the matching amount given by the company.
Job Cut: Tech giant Apple has reportedly fired 185 employees from its headquarters in Cupertino, California. According to the report, these employees were involved in fraudulent activities related to the company’s charitable matching grants program. Many Indian employees are also included among the employees against whom action has been taken. According to media reports, this fraud was allegedly done by the employees in collaboration with some non-profit organizations.
The purpose of this fraud was to increase the compensation amount by the employees by exaggerating their donations. However, Apple has not issued any official statement in this matter. Two non-profit organizations are involved in this fraud – American Chinese International Cultural Exchange (ACICE) and Hop4Kids. Its main accused is Kwan who was the CEO of Hop4Kids and the accountant of ACICE.
How did the employees commit the fraud?
In its report, American television network NBC, citing information from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, reported that several employees were fired for misusing Apple’s charitable matching grants program. This program is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, which aims to increase donations made by employees. According to the report, the employees involved in the fraud misused this program, due to which they were dismissed.
According to the allegations, some employees, in collaboration with non-profit organizations, increased the donation amount wrongly. In this program, the employees pretended that they were donating, while in reality they got this donation back from the charities, and the employees kept the matching amount given by Apple with themselves. Along with this, the accused have also been accused of tax evasion.
