What is the government’s opinion on such a high price of LPG cylinder, no such news has come to the fore. But the internal assessment of the government has shown that consumers are ready to pay up to Rs 1000 for a cylinder. According to the information received from the sources, nothing is clear about what is the opinion of the government regarding the LPG subsidy on the increased price.

According to sources, the government can take two stances regarding LPG cylinders. First, either the government should supply cylinders without subsidy. Second, some selected consumers should also be given the benefit of subsidy. Nothing has been said clearly about giving subsidy. But it is clear that the rule of income of Rs 10 lakh will remain in force and some selected Ujjwala beneficiaries will get the benefit of subsidy.

Is subsidy off or on?

In some places, the subsidy on LPG has been stopped for the last several months and this rule is running from May 2020. This step has been taken after the fall in the international market prices of crude oil and gas during the Kovid epidemic in the country. However, the government has not completely stopped the subsidy on LPG cylinders and this provision continues in the far flung areas of the country.

If we look at the government’s expenditure on subsidies, Rs 3,559 was spent under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) during the financial year 2021. In the financial year 2020, this expenditure was Rs 24,468 crore. The DBT scheme was launched in January 2015 under which customers have to pay the full amount for non-subsidised LPG cylinders while the subsidy money is returned by the government to the consumer’s bank account. This refund is direct, hence the name of this scheme is DBTL.

On September 1, the government had increased the price of LPG cylinders by Rs 25. This increase was made on the domestic cylinder of 14.2 kg. With this increase, the price of cylinder in Delhi has gone up to Rs 884.50. The cost of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Mumbai is currently Rs 884.50 and in Chennai it is Rs 900.50.
