LPG prices doubled in 7 years; 459% jump in tax collection on petrol and diesel

LPG prices have doubled in the last 7 years to Rs 819 per cylinder. At the same time, the prices of petrol and diesel have also increased. Along with this, the increase in tax on petrol and diesel has increased its collection by 459 percent. Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan gave this information in written reply to questions on rising oil prices in the Lok Sabha. Dharmendra Pradhan said that the retail sale price of domestic gas was Rs 410.5 per 14.2 kg cylinder on 1 March 2014, which has reached Rs 819 in March this month.

On the record level of petrol and diesel prices,

Dharmendra Pradhan said that the price of domestic subsidized cylinder has increased during the last few months. Its price in December 2020 was Rs 594 per cylinder. Now it is at 819 rupees. Similarly, the price of kerosene sold to the poor through Public Distribution System (PDS) has increased from Rs 14.96 per liter in March 2014 to Rs 35.35 this month. Petrol and diesel prices are also at their record levels across the country. Currently, petrol is being sold at a price of Rs 91.17 per liter and diesel at Rs 81.47 per liter.

Markets are set prices

Dharmendra Pradhan said that the prices of petrol and diesel have been fixed from 26 June 2010 and 19 October 2014. He said that since then public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) take appropriate decisions on the prices of petrol and diesel based on their international product prices, exchange rates, tax structure, inland freight and other criteria. The minister said that the tax on oil was Rs 52,537 crore in 2013, which increased to Rs 2.13 lakh crore in 2019-20. It rose to Rs 2.94 lakh crore in the first 11 months of this financial year.
