Mahashivratri day is very special according to Hindu calendar. On this day special worship of Lord Shiva is offered. Although Shivaratri comes every month, but the Mahashivaratri which falls on the Chaturdashi of Falgun month has special significance.
According to Hindu Panchang, the festival of Mahashivaratri is celebrated every year on the Trayodashi Tithi of Falgun month Krishna Paksha. This festival is celebrated as the marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Parvati Mata. This year, the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month is falling on 11 March (Thursday). Mahashivaratri is the festival of union of Shiva and Shakti. According to religious beliefs, all the troubles are overcome by worshiping fast on this day.

mango manjari, mandar pusha, raw milk of cow, sugarcane juice, curd, desi ghee, honey, Ganges water, clear water, camphor, incense, lamp, Cotton, sandalwood, panch fruits, panch maewa, panch rasa, gand roli, perfume, molly janeu, Shiva and Maa Parvati’s make-up material, clothes, jewels, gems, panchamishthan, dakshina, puja utensils, misrule are used.
There are many stories about celebrating Mahashivaratri. According to the most famous of these, this festival is celebrated as the night of union of Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that Parvati was married to Lord Shiva on this day. There is also a belief that on this day, Bholenath appeared in the world as 64 Shivling, out of which people were able to find only 12 of his Shivling. We know them as 12 Jyotirlingas.
How to do Mahashivaratri fast
Mahashivaratri fast will begin on Trayodashi Tithi, in which fasting will be kept for the whole day. Devotees worship Lord Shiva on the day of Mahashivaratri and seek blessings from Bholenath before completing their fast.
According to Hindu scriptures, Mahashivaratri is worshiped four times during the night on Chaturdashi. These four times are also known as Char Pahar and it is believed that worshiping during these times frees a person from his past sins and he is blessed with salvation.
It is considered obligatory to perform Shiva Puja during the night and this fast should be observed after sunrise before Chaturdashi Tithi ends on the next day. If you fast, then consume fruit throughout the day and do not consume salt. If you eat salt for any reason, then take rock salt.
