New Delhi: The Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Center in Delhi, run by animal rights activist and BJP MP Maneka Gandhi , has been shut down completely due to allegations of cruelty against a stray dog undergoing treatment there. The videos had gone viral. The seriously injured dog later died. Maneka Gandhi has shared a statement in this regard on Twitter. Maneka Gandhi said that in the last one year due to the Kovid epidemic, there was a shortage of staff in the animal care center and two para-vets who were recently hired were providing assistance to the animals.
He further said, ‘Recently a dog was brought there for rescue . The rescue took a regrettable turn, when the dog was naturally agitated, as she was in extreme pain. The vet, who in turn retaliated with horrific violence. The dog died due to his injuries.
The video of the dog beating was shared on Twitter by animal activist Kaveri Bhardwaj on July 5. In the disturbing video, a man thrashes a dog hard against a wall and then drops it on the floor. Then two men are seen hitting the dog on the face. There were injury marks on the legs and mouth of the dog.Another video went viral on Instagram, in which a woman claiming to be an employee of the Animal Care Center narrates the torture she was subjected to with a dog. Maneka Gandhi strongly condemned the act after the video went viral on social media.
Maneka Gandhi said in her statement, ‘This incident shook all of us to the core. I am personally trembling with anger and aching in my stomach ever since I saw that horrifying video. We immediately lodged an FIR against the para-vets and they have been arrested. The doctor in-charge of the section was given notice to leave the center but that would not be enough.
The BJP MP said that this 40-year-old center needs to be remodeled. For the time being it has been completely closed but we will prepare it again. This time we will set it up even better. Maneka Gandhi said that she will completely change the hospital management and its staff. She will also ensure that all the people working there are provided with animal sensitivity-training.
