Marriage and marriage registration will not happen without pre-marital counseling certificate, new rule is going to be implemented

The Kerala Women’s Commission has proposed making premarital counselling compulsory before marriage registration. The aim is to reduce marital disputes and promote strong family relationships. Commission Chairperson P Satidevi said that this would help couples understand each other better and avoid problems in married life.

Kochi: The Kerala Women’s Commission has made a proposal to address marital disputes and promote strong family ties. The proposal says that pre-marital counselling should be made compulsory at the local body level for couples before they officially register their marriage. The commission made the recommendation so that the root causes of marital problems highlighted in the complaints received can be addressed. Commission chairperson P Sathidevi, who held a district-level meeting in Kozhikode, stressed the urgent need for such interventions. According to her, many complaints point to a lack of understanding between the husband and wife regarding family and marital dynamics.

This is why the decision was taken

The Chairperson of the Women’s Commission said that the Commission found that many couples get married without knowing or understanding each other. Many hide their shortcomings. When these shortcomings come to the fore after marriage or their desires are revealed, it causes disputes in the family.

Counselling will be done at the local level

P Satidevi said that after the introduction of pre-marital counselling services at the local body level, it will help in removing the increasing marital discord between couples. This will enable married couples to travel the long journey of life together.

The data came from the analysis of complaints with the Commission

Addressing the media after a district level court in Kozhikode, Ms Satidevi said that the Commission conducted an analysis. Most of the complaints that came were related to problems in the relationship between husband and wife. She said, ‘Since pre-marital counselling can solve these issues to a great extent, we have recommended the State Government to implement it.’

You will not be troubled by sudden problems after marriage

Ms. Satidevi also said that many couples get married without proper knowledge or awareness about the importance of marital relations and family life. By making the pre-marital counseling certificate a mandatory document for marriage registration, the couple will definitely undergo counseling before marriage. During this time they will be able to know each other.
