New Delhi: The seventh round of talks between the central government and farmer leaders on the important issue of agricultural laws on Monday (Farmers Government Talks) was inconclusive. The next conversation between the two sides will take place on 8 January. During Monday’s talks, the farmer leaders were adamant on their demands. There was talk of repealing only and only three agricultural laws on behalf of the farmers, while on behalf of the government, there was talk of reform. According to the information, in the second round of talks, the government offered to negotiate on the ‘legal form’ of the Minimum Support Price (MSP), but the farmers union leaders refused to discuss it. On the other hand, after talking to the media, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar denied that the farmers union did not trust the government. He said that with the consent of the government and union, an eight-day meeting has been decided, which means that the farmers have faith in the government. He said that the farmers also have the intention that the government should find a way and a situation to end the agitation is ready. The two important topics in the discussion were MSP and Law, overall the discussion was held in a good environment, both sides want the solution to be found. If the government has made a law, then it has been made keeping in mind the interest of farmers. We want the Union to come to the point on which farmers have reservations, on which the government is ready to talk with an open mind.

A two-minute silence was observed for those killed in the agitation before Monday’s talks began. Despite heavy rains and scorching cold in Delhi, farmers have been at the forefront of the border, including the Singhu border. The farmers have given an ultimatum that if their demands are not met, they will further agitate their movement. In the last round, the government had accepted two demands of the farmers. The government had assured the farmer leaders to change the Air Quality Commission ordinance made to withdraw the power amendment bill and prevent stubble burning. However, the screw is stuck on agricultural laws. Farmers have been protesting these laws since September. Farmers have been agitating since 26 November on many borders of Delhi.

Even before the meeting, the leaders of the farmers organizations had said that they will not put a new option in front of the government. In fact, in the last meeting, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had requested the farmers’ organizations to give other options for their demand in relation to agricultural reform laws, which the government will consider. Farmer leaders involved in the last meeting had said that the government has indicated that it will not withdraw the agricultural laws. He described it as a long and complicated process.
