NEET-PG exam will be held on August 11 only, petition seeking postponement of exam rejected in SC

NEET-PG Exam 2024: Senior advocate Sanjay Hegde, appearing for the petitioners, argued that it would be difficult for the candidates to take one exam in the morning and another in the afternoon. With this, the bench headed by CJI Chandrachud dismissed the petition.

NEET-PG Exam 2024: The Supreme Court has rejected a petition seeking postponement of the NEET-PG exam scheduled to be held on Sunday, August 11. The Supreme Court, while hearing the case on Monday (August 9), refused to postpone the NEET-PG exam. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said, “We cannot make a new education policy, and this is not an ideal world”. The petition claimed that candidates have been allotted cities where it is extremely inconvenient for them to reach.

A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra said that they cannot put the careers of two lakh students at risk for five students. The bench said, “How can we postpone such an exam. Mr Sanjay Hegde, nowadays people just ask for postponement of the exam. This is not an ideal world. We are not academic experts.”

Advocate Sanjay Hegde, appearing for the petitioners, said the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, Post Graduate (NEET-PG) needs to be rescheduled as one exam is to be held in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Refusal to accept the petition

The apex court said that if the petition is accepted, two lakh students and four lakh parents will suffer. The bench asked, “Should we put the career of two lakh students at risk at the behest of five petitioners?” The Chief Justice said, “We cannot put the career of so many candidates at risk because of these petitioners”.

Senior advocate Sanjay Hegde, appearing for the petitioners, argued that it would be difficult for the candidates to take one exam in the morning and another in the afternoon. With this, the bench headed by CJI Chandrachud dismissed the petition and ordered, “We are not considering it (petition)”.

It has been postponed once

The petition said that many candidates have been allotted such cities, where it is very inconvenient for them to reach. It said that the examination cities were allotted on July 31. While special centers will be announced on August 8.

The NEET-PG exam was earlier scheduled to be held on June 23. It was postponed as a ‘precautionary measure’ by the Union Health Ministry in view of alleged irregularities in some other competitive exams.
