New Expressway: Work on the first phase of the Maharashtra government’s ambitious project Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor is in full swing. This 126 km long corridor is going to connect Virar and Alibaug of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Its construction will not only reduce the travel time by half, but it will also boost real estate, business and industry. The project will ease the movement in Mumbai and its surrounding areas and will help in reducing traffic congestion.

The first phase of this project will be 79 km long from Virar to Dindoshi, which will include metro and bus services along with roads. The estimated cost for the entire project is Rs 55,000 crore, while about Rs 26,000 crore has been set for the first phase. The project is being implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and it is targeted to be completed by the year 2030.

Travel time reduction and amenities

The Virar-Alibaug Expressway will connect the northern and southern regions of Mumbai, reducing travel time from the current 3 hours to just 1.5 hours. The project is being prepared by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and aims to ease traffic and strengthen overall connectivity.

Objective of the Multimodal Corridor

The 126-km-long corridor will not be limited to just the expressway but will also include road, metro rail, and dedicated bus rapid transit (BRT) systems. The primary objective of the project is to ensure seamless connections between various modes of transport.

Benefits to the real estate sector

According to experts, the project will not only improve transportation but also boost demand for real estate in the surrounding areas. Areas like Virar, Panvel and Alibaug are likely to see property prices rise and investments in residential and commercial projects.

Economic and environmental benefits

The project will reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Better road infrastructure will speed up freight movement in industrial areas.

Local employment generation will also be boosted.

Project features and phases

The corridor will be completed in three phases.

The first phase will see the construction of a road from Virar to Panvel.

The final phase will connect Panvel to Alibaug.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be ₹55,000 crore.

Widespread impact of the Multimodal Corridor

This project will not only improve the connectivity of the Mumbai region, but will also strengthen the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). Apart from this, it will also increase connectivity between major cities like Mumbai and Pune.
