New Flight Baggage Rules: Important news for air travelers. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has changed the rules for carrying luggage during air travel. Under the new rules of BCAS, now passengers will be allowed to carry only one hand bag or cabin bag inside the flight. Its weight should not exceed 7 kg. These rules will apply to both domestic and international flights and it will be mandatory for passengers to follow them.

The purpose of the new rule is to ensure airport security due to increasing passenger numbers as well as to streamline the boarding and check-in process. According to the new rules, it will be mandatory to check-in all bags except hand bags. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other security agencies will check bags more strictly. In fact, these changes have been made keeping in mind the increasing number of passengers and security challenges at the airport. These initiatives will make the security and management of the airport more streamlined. The security check process will be faster and effective due to less luggage.

As per the new rules

1. Each passenger will be allowed to carry only one cabin bag or hand bag.

2. The maximum weight of the bag should be 7 kg.

3. The size of the bag should not exceed 40 cm (length) x 20 cm (width) x 55 cm (height).

4. Personal bags such as laptop bags, ladies purse or small bags (up to 3 kg) are allowed.

5. Violation of these rules may attract additional charges or fines.

New rules of airlines

Air India and Indigo have also issued guidelines regarding the new rules related to baggage. In Air India’s economy and premium economy, hand bags up to 7 kg are allowed. At the same time, hand bags up to 10 kg can be carried in business and first class. In Indigo, each passenger is allowed to carry one cabin bag (7 kg) and one personal bag (3 kg). The total size of the bag should not exceed 115 cm.

  • Check the weight and size of the bag before traveling.
  • If you have more than 7 kg of luggage, keep it in check-in baggage.
  • Read the rules of the airlines, the rules of every airline can be different, definitely check the guidelines of your airline.
  • Keep important items separate like passport, ticket, medicines and essential items in the hand bag.
