Toll Collection New System: Taking a big decision, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has abolished the existing toll system. Along with this, he has announced the launch of satellite toll collection system. He said today on Friday (July 26) that the government is abolishing the toll and soon a satellite-based toll collection system will be started. The purpose behind implementing this system is to increase toll collection and reduce the congestion at toll plazas.
While giving a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, he had also said that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is going to implement the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This will be only at select toll plazas right now. Earlier, while talking to news agency ANI, Nitin Gadkari had said, “Now we are abolishing the toll and there will be a satellite-based toll collection system. Money will be deducted from your bank account and you will be charged according to the distance you travel. This will save time and money. Earlier it used to take 9 hours to go from Mumbai to Pune, now it has been reduced to 2 hours.”
Workshop was held last month
An international workshop was held on June 25, 2024 to consult stakeholders on GNSS-based systems. This was followed by a global Expression of Interest (EOI) submission on June 7, 2024, inviting wide industrial participation. The last date for submission of EOI was July 22, 2024.
Nitin Gadkari had given information about the new system last year
Earlier in December, Nitin Gadkari had announced that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) aims to implement this new system by March 2024. The World Bank has been informed about the efforts to streamline processes and reduce waiting time at toll plazas. With the introduction of FASTag, the average waiting time at toll plazas has reduced significantly. It has been tried on the Bengaluru-Mysore section of NH-275 in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana.
