National Means-cum-merit Scholarship Scheme: To deal with the problem of school drop out of students, a special scholarship ‘National Means-cum-merit Scholarship Scheme’ has been started. This scholarship has been specially designed so that the children studying in schools do not leave studies due to financial constraints. The scholarship amount is Rs 12,000 per year. One lakh scholarships are being given under this scheme.
Which students will get scholarship
According to the Union Education Ministry, the process of online submission or registration of scholarship applications on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for the year 2023-24 started on 1 October 2023. Under the ‘National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) Scheme’, meritorious students from economically weaker section from class 9 to class 12 are provided to reduce the problem of drop out in class 8th.
In addition, scholarships are provided to students from class 12th to encourage them to continue their education at the secondary level.
One lakh scholarship
The Education Ministry says that one lakh new scholarships are provided every year to selected students from class 9 on their renewal in classes 10 to 12 for students studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools. National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) has been made available on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). It is a one-stop platform for scholarship schemes offered to students.
Scholarship will come directly into students’ bank accounts
NMMSS scholarship is disbursed directly into the bank accounts of selected students by electronic transfer through Public Financial Management System (PFMS) following DBT mode. This is a plan of the Central Government. Students whose parents’ income from all sources does not exceed Rs 3,50,000 per year are eligible to avail the scholarship.
To appear in the selection examination for the award of scholarship, students must have a minimum of 55 percent marks or equivalent grade in the seventh class examination (relaxation of 5 percent for SC, ST students). Scholarship applications go through two levels of verification on the National Scholarship Portal. The first is verified by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO) at the school level and the second by the District Nodal Officer (DNO).
