OTT Apps: Government is going to bring a new law for OTT apps like Netflix, Zee5, obscene content will be controlled

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that the government is bringing a new law to regulate OTT apps. Its proposal has also been prepared.

A new law is being brought by the Government of India to regulate over-the-top (OTT) apps. Once this bill is passed in Parliament, the government will be able to form a committee for content evaluation of OTT apps like Netflix, Amazon, Sony Liv and Hotstar.

Giving information about the new draft law on Friday, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that taking forward the vision of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and ‘Ease of Living’ of the Honorable Prime Minister, We are proud to present the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill. This important legislation modernizes the regulatory framework of our broadcasting sector and replaces legacy acts, rules and guidelines with an integrated, future-focused approach. Thakur further said that the new law will be according to OTT, digital media, DTH, IPTV and others. It will promote high technology and service regulation.

CEC will be formed

In the post made by Thakur, it was told that after this law, ECE i.e. Content Evaluation Committee will be formed. Along with this, Broadcast Advisory Council will be formed, so that decisions can be taken quickly.

Opinion sought from all parties

The Union Minister further wrote in the post that everyone’s feedback is important for us. I invite all stakeholders to help us shape this historic bill. This bill will go a long way in establishing a more efficient, inclusive and visionary broadcasting ecosystem.

Let us tell you, currently there is no law in the country to regulate OTT content. With the introduction of the new law, obscene OTT content will be curbed.
