In 2015, China announced a USD 46 billion economic project in Pakistan, of which Balochistan is an integral part. Along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Beijing aims to expand its influence in Pakistan and Central and South Asia to counter US and Indian influence.
CPEC connects Pakistan’s southern Gwadar port (626 kilometers, 389 mi west of Karachi) to China’s western Xinjiang region in the Arabian Sea. It also includes plans to build road, rail and oil pipeline links to improve connectivity between China and the Middle East.
Baloch separatists, militants and political groups both oppose China’s increased participation in the province. An upsurge in deadly attacks by Baloch separatists in Pakistan has increased the risk and cost of China’s ambitious Belt and Road projects.
