For adults it remains valid for ten years from the date of issue, after which renewal is required. The renewal process can be initiated up to three years after expiry or up to one year before expiry. It is advisable to start the renewal process at least nine months before expiry to avoid delays affecting travel plans.
For minors, the passport is valid for five years or until they turn 18, whichever is earlier. Minors aged 15 to 18 years can choose to apply for a full-validity passport lasting up to 10 years using the online passport renewal service.
How to renew passport online?
- Visit the Passport Seva website.
- Register as a new user or log in if you are an existing user.
- Click on ‘Apply for New Passport/Apply for Re-issue of Passport’.
- Select ‘Click here to fill the application form’.
- Fill in the required details including applicant, family and address information.
- Enter emergency contact details and previous passport details.
- Agree with the self-declaration and submit the form.
- After submitting the form, proceed to pay the passport renewal fee and schedule an appointment.
Schedule an appointment
- Log in to the Passport Seva website.
- Select ‘View saved and submitted applications’ and select ‘Make payment and schedule appointment’.
- Choose a payment method and select a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
- Confirm your PSK by entering the captcha code.
- Choose a convenient slot from the available dates and select ‘Make Payment & Book Appointment’.
Renewal charges vary depending on age, booklet pages and plan chosen (normal or instant). Tatkal plan carries an additional fee of Rs 2000.
Documents required for renewal include original passport, application receipt, self-attested copies of relevant pages, proof of address and other specific documents depending on your category. After uploading the document, you need to visit the Passport Seva Kendra on the appointment date to complete the renewal process.
How to check passport renewal status?
- Log in to the Passport Seva Portal.
- Select ‘Track Application Status’.
- Enter details like application type, file number and date of birth.
- Click on ‘Track Status’ to know the status of your passport.
The processing time depends on the plan chosen, the normal plan takes 30-60 days and the instant plan ensures quick renewal in 3-7 days. Following these steps will ensure a successful and stress-free online passport renewal experience.
Passport Application Fee:
- Re-issue of passport with additional booklet due to expiry of fresh passport/10 years visa page (36 pages): Rs 1500
- Re-issue of passport with additional booklet due to expiry of fresh passport/visa pages of ten years validity (60 pages): Rs 2000
- New passport/re-issue of passport for minors (under 18 years of age), valid for five years or till the minor turns 18 years of age, whichever is earlier (36 pages): Rs 1000
