Periods Leave: Punjab University has decided to give leave to female students during periods. However, the university has also set some conditions for this, only those girl students who fulfill them will be able to avail the benefit of this leave.

Leave During Periods: Female students of Punjab University, Chandigarh will now be able to take leave during periods. Through this initiative, Panjab University has become the first university in the region to provide period leave to female students. According to reports, this plan has been approved by Panjab University Vice Chancellor Renu Wig.

Holidays will be implemented in the following semesters for the academic session 2024-2025 pending permission from the University Senate, which will take the final decision. A circular in this regard was issued by Dean of University Instruction (DUI) Rumina Sethi on Wednesday, April 10. Students should note that leave for periods will be given, but there are terms and conditions attached to it.

These conditions must be fulfilled

According to the official announcement, girl students who are enrolled in classes for at least 15 days are eligible for one day leave “in the calendar month for teaching”. Additionally, the email said that girl students can take a maximum of four such leaves in each semester, in which the leave days will be limited to instruction days only.

You will not get leave during this period

Also, leaves will not be accepted during any test – internal or external, mid semester or final semester, or even practical exams. It is important to highlight that to utilize menstrual leave (periods), girl students have to complete a paperwork in the department office.

Additionally, the leave request must be submitted within five business days following the student’s absence. Menstrual benefit will be provided on the basis of self-certification of the student and may be approved by the Chairman or Director of the Department.

This rule is applicable in these universities also

In January 2023, Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kerala became the first university in the country to grant menstrual leave to its female students. Notably, in January 2023, the Department of Higher Education of the Government of Kerala announced that it would grant menstrual leave to female students enrolled in all state-run universities. Guwahati University in Assam, Tezpur University in Assam and NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad are among the other institutions that provide menstrual leave.
