After this, they took Om Birla to the Speaker’s chair. Rahul Gandhi was elected Leader of Opposition by the opposition alliance a day earlier. He is the third leader of the Gandhi family to take responsibility in the House as Leader of Opposition. Earlier, his mother Sonia Gandhi and father Rajiv Gandhi have been Leader of Opposition in the House.
Om Birla, who was elected MP for the third consecutive time from Kota, Rajasthan for the 18th Lok Sabha, has been elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He defeated opposition alliance candidate and Congress MP K Suresh by voice vote. After this, Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the Leader of the House shook hands with each other. Both came together to welcome Om Birla.

Rahul Gandhi is the third member of the Gandhi family to hold the post of Leader of the Opposition. Before Rahul Gandhi, his mother Sonia Gandhi served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha from 1999 to 2004. Before that, his father Rajiv Gandhi was also the Leader of the Opposition from 1989 to 1990.
After Om Birla was elected Speaker of Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju took him to the Speaker’s chair. Rahul Gandhi was also with him. After Om Birla sat on the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair, PM Modi congratulated Birla and said, “It is an honor that you have been elected to this Speaker for the second time.
