PMAY: Good News! Now Women will get full ownership rights of houses under PM Awas Yojana

PMAY-G: Currently, 74% of the houses being built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) are owned by women either singly or jointly.

PMAY-G: Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), the central government aims to empower women living in villages. In the second phase of this scheme, the target has been set to give 100 percent ownership to women in the houses given in rural areas. Apart from this, a new survey ‘Awas-Plus 2024’ is being brought under which the beneficiaries will have to undergo a survey according to the updated norms for new houses. The government is trying to register the houses registered in the second phase in the name of the female members of the beneficiary families.

According to the report of Economic Times, a new list of beneficiaries will be prepared and through this, for the first time, people wishing to enroll in this scheme will be allowed to do ‘self survey’. After the central government approved the construction of two crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Rural (PMAY-G), now preparations to start its second phase have almost been completed.

What is the participation of women in the current first phase

At present, 74 percent of the houses being built under PMAY-G are owned by women alone or jointly.

What will be special in the second phase

According to a source in the Ministry of Rural Development, to maintain transparency, ‘facial recognition’ technology will be used for all the first-time surveyors and the people being surveyed. Along with this, the official source said that this time the eligibility criteria for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin has been relaxed and some limitations have been removed. New surveys will be conducted through ‘Awas Plus App’.

What is the timeline for the second phase of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin

Many states of the country have been directed to complete the Awas-Plus 2024 survey by November 30 and approve houses for eligible families by December 31. The construction of these houses is expected to be completed within a year.

According to the Rural Development Ministry, 2.67 crore houses have been built under PMAY-G since the launch of the scheme in 2016. At the same time, construction of about 77 lakh pending houses under the Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana has also been completed. PMAY-G was started in 2016 and its target was to build 2.95 crore houses in five years.
