It is a direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme, under which cash benefits are sent directly to pregnant women in their bank account to enhance nutritional requirements. This scheme has been implemented from 01-01-2017.

Under the scheme, those pregnant women and lactating mothers receive a cash benefit of five thousand rupees in three installments, who have done the initial registration of childbirth, have done maternity check, have registered childbirth and the first child of the family. The benefits of this scheme can be claimed in any part of the country. This benefit is not available to those who regularly work in the Central Government, State Government or Public Sector Undertaking or who are already receiving similar benefits under any law.

According to the government, from 2018-19 till 29 January this year, a total of 1.83 crore pregnant women have claimed benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).
