Public Holiday Makar Sakranti 2025: In North India, there will be holiday on the occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Hazrat Ali’s birthday, while in South India, Pongal, Thiruvalluvar Day and Uzhavar Thirunal will be celebrated.

Public Holiday: Different states of the country have started announcing holidays for Makar Sakranti. In some states, there is a holiday of four days and in some, five days. In North India, a long holiday is coming due to Sunday and second Saturday. Whereas in the southern states, there is a holiday of up to a week.

Three festivals are celebrated on January 14, Pongal, Makar Sankranti and Hazrat Ali’s birthday. In South India, Pongal is celebrated with traditional delicacies, decorations and worship of the Sun God. Makar Sankranti, celebrated across India, is celebrated with kite flying, sweets and family gatherings. Meanwhile, prayers, processions and community service are organised for the revered Islamic leader on Hazrat Ali’s birthday.

Three to four days holiday in North India

Banks will remain closed on January 11 as it is the second Saturday. Many offices also have a holiday on second Saturdays. This day is also Missionary Day/Imoinu Iratpa. Due to which there will be a holiday in Aizawl and Imphal as well. January 12 is Sunday, due to which there is a holiday across the country. January 13 is Lohri, Lohri is celebrated with great pomp in states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir. On the other hand, due to Makar Sankranti on 14th January, holiday has been declared in many states of North India.

5-day holiday declared in Telangana

The education department of the Telangana government has declared Sankranti holidays from January 13 to 17 in its school calendar for 2024-25. However, as January 11 is the second Saturday and January 12 is a Sunday, employees can take an additional day off on Monday, January 13 and enjoy a long weekend.

6-day holiday in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government has declared a five-day holiday in all schools, colleges and government offices to mark Pongal 2025. Pongal, which falls on January 14, will be followed by Thiruvalluvar Day and Uzhavar Thirunal on January 15 and 16 respectively. On Saturday, the government declared an additional holiday on January 17 in response to widespread requests from various sections of the state. “The festival of Pongal is on January 14, followed by holidays on January 15, 16, 18 and 19,” an official said in a press release. Many government employees and students visit their native places to celebrate Pongal. Considering their requests, the government has declared January 17 as a holiday.”
