The seismology department had earlier erroneously reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was centered at a depth of 19 km in Amritsar, Punjab. However, he later issued a revised statement confirming that the earthquake actually struck Tajikistan. The department said that the mistake was caused by software.

National Seismology Center (NCS) said that the earthquake measured 6.3. The earthquake occurred at 10.34 pm. NCL operations chief JL Gautam said, “The epicenter of the earthquake was Tajikistan. Initial investigations revealed that the center was Amritsar. We have revised that information.” At the same time, M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said that the message was taken by ‘fault in the system’ and it has been rectified. The NCS said that there were two tremors in the earthquake, at 10.31 in Tajikistan and 10.34 in Amritsar. Later, Gautam said, “One blow came.”
