Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told in the Lok Sabha how the government is working to provide lower berths in trains to senior citizens, women aged 45 years and above and pregnant women.
New Delhi. Questions often arise about lower berths in railways. Especially for women, senior citizens and Divyang passengers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has recently given a big statement on this issue. The Railway Minister said that efforts are being made to provide the facility of lower berths to women, senior citizens and Divyang passengers on priority basis. He told that the Railways is constantly working in this direction so that these passengers do not face any kind of inconvenience during the journey.
The minister also clarified that the number of lower berths is limited, so it is not possible to provide this facility to everyone. But the Railways is trying to ensure that priority is given to the passengers who need it the most. It has become clear from this statement of the Railway Minister that the Railways is taking full care of the convenience of women, senior citizens and Divyang passengers and is making every effort to make their journey comfortable.
Reserved lower berths in trains
The Indian Railways system has a certain number of lower berths in every coach. For example, in sleeper class, every coach has 6 to 7 lower berths. Whereas in 3 tier AC (3AC), every coach has 4 to 5 lower berths. Whereas in 2 tier AC (2AC), every coach has 3 to 4 lower berths.
Indian Railways always gives preference to Divyang passengers. 2 lower berths are reserved in sleeper class. 4 lower berths in 3AC and 3E coaches, 4 seats in second seating or chair car are reserved for Divyang passengers. This facility is also available in all mail, express, premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi. No matter which train you choose, whether you have a concessional ticket or not, this facility is always available.
What if the lower berth remains vacant?
If the lower berth becomes vacant during the journey, it is given on priority basis to senior citizens, disabled persons and pregnant women who were earlier allotted middle or upper berths.
