Railways has issued a new rule regarding lower berth, now the lower seat will be reserved for these passengers, Details here

Without Train Ticket Railway Rules: Getting a confirmed train ticket during the festive season is no less than a difficult task. Actually, during this time the number of passengers traveling in trains increases manifold. But this does not mean that you start traveling in the train without a ticket. If caught doing so, the TTE can impose a fine on you. At the same time, in some cases you can also be sentenced to imprisonment. In such a situation, know the whole thing before getting into any trouble.

Under which section is the fine imposed?

Sections 137 and 138 of the Railway Act 1989 explain in detail the fines to be imposed on passengers traveling without tickets.

How much is the fine?

According to the rules of Indian Railways, if you are caught travelling in a train without a ticket, you may have to pay a fine of up to Rs 250. Along with this, the full cost of your ticket is also recovered as a fine.

In this situation, a higher penalty may be imposed

If a passenger is caught travelling without ticket during the train journey and it is not clear from where he boarded the train, then in that case the fare from the station from where the train is coming to the last station is charged as penalty.

Platform ticket can reduce penalty

If you want to avoid such a situation, you should take a platform ticket from the station from which you are boarding the train. The platform ticket can be proof of which station you boarded the train from.

Can I get a seat after paying the fine?

It is not mandatory that if a ticketless passenger pays the fine, he will get a confirmed seat. However, this depends on the TTE. If there is an empty seat in the train, it can be given to the passenger.

If you are travelling without a ticket, then do this work

In case of not having a ticket, just taking a platform ticket is not enough. To avoid any major inconvenience, you should contact the TTE as soon as the journey starts and tell him your situation. By doing this, your chances of getting a berth increase and you also get rid of any unnecessary hassle.

…otherwise you will be sent straight to jail

According to the railway rules, if you are caught without a ticket and the TTE is not satisfied with your arguments, then the maximum punishment that can be meted out to you is an imprisonment of up to 6 months or a fine of up to Rs 1,000 or both.
