Railway Rules: Railway passengers can travel in another train if they miss the train, know the rules of Railways

Train Ticket Booking: Most people in India book their train tickets in advance (Train Ticket Booking) and only consider other options when necessary. However, sometimes, due to unforeseen reasons, a passenger may miss their train (Train Missed), and many assume that their ticket is now worthless. But is this really the case? If you miss your train, can you travel on another one using the same ticket? Or do you need to buy a new one? Many people are unaware of the exact railway rules. Let’s understand what the Indian Railways says about this situation.

What Should You Do If You Miss Your Train?

Missing a train can be a stressful experience for any traveler. The first question that comes to mind is whether you can get a refund (Train Ticket Refund Rules), and the second is whether you can board another train using the same ticket. According to railway rules, the answer depends on the type of ticket you have.

Can You Travel on Another Train with a General Ticket?

If you have a general ticket, you can travel on another train of the same category without any issues. However, if you wish to board a different category of train, you may have to pay a fine.

Trains like Mail-Express, Superfast, Rajdhani, and Vande Bharat do not allow travel with a general ticket. If you attempt to travel on these premium trains with a general ticket, the TTE (Train Ticket Examiner) may consider you a ticketless passenger and charge a penalty.

What Happens If You Have a Reserved Ticket?

If you have a reserved ticket and you miss your train, you cannot use the same ticket to travel on another train. If you try to do so and get caught, the TTE will consider you a ticketless passenger and may impose a fine as per railway rules.

If you refuse to pay the fine, legal action could be taken, and you may even face jail time. Therefore, the correct approach is to apply for a refund by filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) and purchase a new ticket for another train.

How to File a TDR for a Missed Train?

If you miss your train, you can apply for a refund through the TDR Filing process. The method depends on how you booked your ticket.

Offline TDR Filing (For Counter Tickets)

If you booked your ticket at a railway counter, you need to file a TDR offline.

  • Visit the railway station’s ticket counter.
  • Fill out the TDR form with the necessary details.
  • Submit the form and wait for the refund process.

Online TDR Filing (For E-Tickets)

If you booked your ticket online (E-Ticket) via IRCTC, you can file a TDR through the website or mobile app.

  • Log in to your IRCTC account.
  • Click on the “Train” option and select “File TDR”.
  • Choose the ticket, select the reason, and submit the TDR.
  • The refund amount will be credited to your bank account or wallet within 60 days.

Train Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules

Indian Railways has specific rules for ticket cancellation and refunds:

  • No refund is given for cancelled Tatkal tickets (Tatkal Ticket Rules).
  • If you cancel a ticket 48 to 12 hours before the train’s departure, 25% of the ticket price will be deducted as a cancellation fee.
  • If you cancel a ticket 12 to 4 hours before departure, 50% of the ticket price will be deducted.
  • Waiting List (WL) and RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets can be cancelled up to 30 minutes before the train’s departure for a refund. After that, no refund will be issued.

Key Takeaways

If you miss your train, do not panic.

  • General ticket holders can board another train of the same category.
  • Reserved ticket holders must apply for a TDR refund and book a new ticket for another train.
  • Traveling without a valid ticket can result in heavy fines or legal action.

Always check railway rules before making any travel decisions to avoid unnecessary trouble.
