Rainfall Alert: Heavy rain alert in three states amid winter storm, schools and colleges closed

The Meteorological Department says that the cold is going to be more severe in the next three days and there is a possibility of the mercury falling further.

According to IMD, orange alert has been declared in South Tamil Nadu for December 17 and 18. There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain here. Earlier on Sunday, heavy rains occurred in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts. Very heavy rainfall was recorded in some areas. Light to moderate rain has been recorded at most places in southern Tamil Nadu since Saturday. Due to heavy rains, water has entered the houses in low-lying areas. There is a possibility of heavy rain in Lakshadweep on December 18.

Schools closed in many districts

The Meteorological Center (RMC) bulletin said that a cyclonic circulation is now observed over the Comorin area and its neighbourhood, extending up to mid-tropospheric levels. In view of the weather conditions, schools in Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and Tenkasi districts have declared holidays.

Sensing the threat of floods, Chief Minister MK Stalin directed officials to release surplus water into the Kannada Channel, which will prevent flood waters from reaching Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. Floods can cause problems for the farmers here. Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts have received heavy rains. Nalumukku area in Tirunelveli district recorded the highest rainfall of 19 cm.

Many trains canceled due to heavy rain

There has been waterlogging in four districts of Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains since Sunday night. All educational institutions have been closed on Monday due to bad weather. Many trains were either completely or partially canceled as flood waters submerged railway tracks and washed away the ballast around the tracks.

Weather condition in Delhi-NCR

According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in Delhi on Sunday was recorded at 6.5 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below the average. Due to rain in some parts of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, the severity of winter has increased in Delhi-NCR. The temperature here is reaching 5 degrees at night. Amidst the harsh winter, dense fog has also made the condition of people miserable.

Punjab and Haryana

According to the weather department report, cold conditions prevailed in most parts of Punjab and Haryana on Sunday and Gurdaspur recorded a minimum temperature of 5.5 degrees Celsius. The mercury reached 6.7 degrees Celsius in Patiala and 7.1 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana. In Haryana, the minimum temperature was recorded at 6.2 degrees Celsius in Hisar, 6.6 degrees Celsius in Karnal, 7.4 degrees Celsius in Rohtak and 7.6 degrees Celsius in Narnaul. IMD has predicted the mercury to drop further in the northwestern states in the next three days.

Weather in UP and Bihar

The Meteorological Department has predicted a huge drop in temperature in the states of UP and Bihar. According to the Meteorological Department, UP will remain cloudy for the next three days. At the same time, the effect of fog and mist will remain in Bihar in the morning. Due to westerly wind, it will remain cold in the morning and evening.

Snowfall in Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand

There has been snowfall in Gilgit, Baltistan, Ladakh and Muzaffarabad of Jammu and Kashmir. There has been snowfall in the high altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh including Shimla, Kullu and Manali. At the same time, snowfall in the high altitude areas of Uttarakhand has increased the cold in the plains.
