It is extremely cold these days in many parts of North India. The rain in some other areas including Eastern UP has further increased the tremors. There were freezing cold conditions on Friday as the maximum temperature dropped by 2 to 10 degrees Celsius. Traffic was affected due to dense fog in and around the Ganga plains and central and eastern parts of the country. The weather office said that severe cold day conditions prevailed at many places in Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab. ‘Cold Day’ conditions prevailed in parts of Delhi and North Madhya Pradesh. Due to lack of sunlight in the areas, the maximum temperature remained between 10 to 18 degrees Celsius.
Cold day occurs when the temperature drops below 10 °C and the maximum temperature falls below the season normal by 4.5 to 6.4 °C. At the same time, a severe cold day occurs when the maximum temperature falls below 6.5 degrees Celsius and above. According to IMD, dense fog is going to affect Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan till Sunday. Apart from this, there will be dense fog in Western Uttar Pradesh and Western Rajasthan today morning and evening. Similar weather is going to prevail in these areas till January 8.
Dense fog from MP to Manipur

Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Odisha are not going to get respite from fog till Monday. At the same time, a cold day was recorded in the national capital New Delhi on Friday as the minimum temperature reached 9.4 degrees Celsius. There was dense fog in some parts of Delhi this morning also due to which people are facing problems in movement.
Rain in these areas including Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand
Amidst the harsh winter and fog, the rain is going to increase the problems further. The Meteorological Department estimates that some areas of Madhya Pradesh may receive light to moderate rain till Tuesday. Apart from this, there are chances of light rain in Eastern UP, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Sikkim today. There may be rain in different parts of South India also. IMD says that till Sunday there may be heavy rain in different areas of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
Cold day to severe cold day conditions
India Meteorological Department said that cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely to continue in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan for the next 2 days. After this the cold will start reducing. Dense fog will prevail over northwest India during the next two days and will gradually reduce after that, the statement said. In this way, rain in severe cold is going to add more problems. The cold winds amid the rain have increased the chill. Meteorologists have appealed to take all measures to protect themselves from cold and avoid non-essential travel.
