RBI had announced the withdrawal of 2000 rupee notes from circulation on 19 May 2023. On 19 May 2023, 2000 rupee notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation. This figure came down to Rs 7755 crore at the end of business on 31 May 2024. The Reserve Bank had given time till 7 October 2023 to deposit 2000 rupee notes.
New Delhi. The Reserve Bank (RBI) said on Monday that 97.82 percent of the bank notes of Rs 2000 have returned to the banking system. Now only Rs 7,755 crore is with the public. The RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023.
Total notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore
On May 19, 2023, a total of Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation. This figure came down to Rs 7,755 crore at the close of business on May 31, 2024. The central bank said in a statement, “Thus, 97.82 percent of the Rs 2000 bank notes that were in circulation till May 19, 2023 have returned.”
The Reserve Bank had given the facility of depositing or exchanging Rs 2000 bank notes in all bank branches of the country till October 7, 2023. However, from May 19, 2023, Rs 2000 bank notes are available only in 19 issue offices of RBI. Also, common people can send Rs 2000 notes from any post office in the country through Indian Post to any RBI office to deposit them in their bank accounts.
2000 notes came in November 2016
The 19 RBI offices that deposit/exchange bank notes are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Rs 2000 bank notes were introduced in November 2016 after the withdrawal of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 bank notes from circulation.
