Satellite-based Toll Collection System: The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system is designed to improve the existing toll methods and provide greater convenience to commuters.
Satellite-based toll collection system: Taking a major step towards seamless travel and reducing congestion on highways, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the satellite-based toll collection policy will be implemented across the country within the next 15 days. Under this system, vehicles will no longer need to stop at toll plazas. The new goal is to revolutionise toll collection processes, bringing more efficiency and convenience to commuters.
Passengers will be able to travel free up to 20 km
The satellite-based toll collection system works on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for accurate real-time location tracking. Under this system, vehicles equipped with GNSS technology can enjoy toll-free travel up to 20 km in each direction per day on national highways and expressways.
To assess the effectiveness and accuracy of the system, the government has initiated pilot projects on selected sections of national highways. Earlier, the satellite-based toll system was introduced with FASTag. The GNSS-based electronic toll collection (ETC) system is designed to improve existing tolling methods and provide more convenience to commuters.
Satellite Based Toll Collection System: Payment Process
It is important to note that vehicles fitted with on-board unit (OBU) or tracking device will be charged based on the actual distance travelled on the highways. The toll payment will be automatically deducted from the digital wallet linked to the OBU, ensuring a seamless and efficient payment process.
