For this, BSNL has partnered with American satellite communication company Viasat. The company successfully demoed satellite-based two-way messaging service at the Indian Mobile Congress 2024.
What will be the benefit?
It is clear from the name of satellite-to-device service that in this process, service will be available directly on the device with the help of satellite. Right now we have to depend on telecom towers to use telecom services. Because of this, there is no network in many remote areas. In such a situation, with the help of satellite-to-device service, people in such areas will get better connectivity options.

BSNL’s Satellite-to-Device service
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has posted about this on the social media platform X. DoT wrote, ‘BSNL has launched the country’s first Satellite-to-Device service. Now connectivity will be easily available even in remote areas of India.’
Along with this message, DoT has also posted a video, which explains about this service. Some time ago Viasat had said that they are working with other companies including BSNL in India, so that satellite services can be expanded to consumers and IoT devices.
In the trial, Viasat demonstrated two-way communication and emergency SOS messaging services using a commercial Android smartphone using non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity.
When will common people get this service?
Through this, a message was sent to Viasat’s L-band satellite 36 thousand kilometers away. At the Indian Mobile Congress, Viasat had said that direct-to-device connectivity is a new technology, which will enable mobile, smartwatch, car as well as industrial machinery and transport operators to easily stay connected to terrestrial and satellite networks.
However, the Telecom Department, BSNL and Viasat have not shared any information about the availability, region and price of this service. Through this service, BSNL has definitely gone one step ahead of other telecom companies.
