This is 7 years old from today. In 2013, Vandana Marathahalli, who lives in Bengaluru, capital of Karnataka, in South India, gave her husband Kumar a debit card to withdraw Rs 25,000 from an ATM. Marathahalli also told her husband the PIN of the debit card.

But even after swapping the card at the ATM card machine, the money did not come out. A slip of debit (withdrawal from account) was received from the ATM. Regarding this, both these husband and wife first complained to the bank to get the money.




To this, SBI said in its reply, ATM is non-transferable. The bank closed the case of Marathahalli, saying that the account holder had not used the ATM.

After this, both the husband and wife complained to the Banking Ombudsman and Consumer Forum. He was also given CCTV footage, in which Kumar was shown using the ATM, but no cash was seen running out.

But the bank citing its rules said that the debit card belongs to Vandana. While she was not seen in the footage.

After completing the hearing of this entire case, the Consumer Court ruled that her husband did not take a self check or authority letter to withdraw Vandana Rs 25,000. That is why this case is dismissed.

What is the rule related to SBI ATM

SBI, the country’s largest state-run bank, says that debit cards are non-transferable, so even a family member cannot be given this for use. Even husbands cannot use their wife’s ATM card. If anyone does this, it will be against the security rules.

SBI says that if something goes wrong with your ATM card, it can be blocked immediately. Let’s know the important things related to this…

Let me tell you that the number you are messaging with should be registered with the bank. When your request for blocking is received by the bank, the message will be sent to your registered number, in which the date and time of your blocking are present.

If the customer wants to block SBI debit / ATM card through call then you have to call this toll free number 1800-11-22-11, 1800-425-3800 or 080-080-26599990. After this, the customer has to follow the instructions received on the call. Apart from this, customers can block their card with the help of SBI Quick app.

Apart from this, to block the card through SMS, you will have to send the message ‘BLOCK <space> the last 4 digits of your card’ to the number 567676. For example- the last 4 digits of your ATM is 4567, then you have to message 567676 by writing BLOCK 4567 in the message.




Let’s know about some tips related to using ATM card

SBI has told in its information on its website that what you have to do and what not to do….

(1) Have complete privacy during ATM transaction. Ensure that no one is watching while entering the PIN number in the ATM machine,

(2) After the transaction, see that the welcome screen has come in the machine. Do not leave the machine before that.

(3) Ensure that your existing mobile number is registered with the bank. With this, you will get alerts of all transactions from the bank.

(4) After shopping, do not forget to withdraw your card from any merchant. In case of no cash withdrawal and withdrawal of ATM, inform the bank immediately.

(5) If there is any extra device in the ATM, then keep an eye on it. After doing any transaction, immediately check the SMS on the mobile.

(6)Immediately inform the bank if an ATM card is lost or stolen. Check the transaction alerts and bank statements coming from the bank regularly.

(7)  Never write your PIN number on the card. Avoid talking on mobile phone during the transaction.

(8) Do not seek help from unknown people in ATM transactions or do not give cards to anyone else for transactions.

(9) Do not tell your ATM PIN to any person. Even bank employees and family members should not give this information. During the payment, keep a close watch on the card and do not let it go out of sight.
