New Delhi: The petitioner has sought full counting of VVPAT slips in the elections as opposed to the existing practice of verification of only 5 randomly selected EVMs through VVPAT paper slips. On Monday, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Election Commission on this petition. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta issued notice to the Election Commission and tagged the petition filed by lawyer and activist Arun Kumar Aggarwal with a similar petition filed by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), an NGO. A similar demand was made.

The voter has the right to verify the vote cast by him and the vote counted by the paper vote of the VVPAT for the purpose of the directions of this Hon’ble Court in Subramanian Swamy vs. Election Commission of India (2013) under Articles 19 and 21. The petition seeks to direct the ECI to mandatorily cross-verify all VVPAT paper slips with the votes ‘recorded as polled’ by the voter through VVPAT by counting them. .
The petition also sought a direction to the Election Commission to allow the voter to insert the VVPAT slip extracted from the VVPAT in the ballot box to ensure that the voter’s vote is counted as a ‘record’.
