Sitaram Yechury passed away, CPM general secretary was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Delhi

Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has passed away. He was ill for some time.

He was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi. He was 72 years old.

The CPI(M) said that Sitaram Yechury breathed his last at 3:03 pm today at AIIMS.

The CPI(M) tweeted, “Our dear comrade Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the CPI(M), passed away today at AIIMS. Red salute to comrade Sitaram Yechury.”

In a statement issued by the CPM on September 10, it was said that Yechury had a serious infection in the respiratory tract.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of Sitaram Yechury and described him as a leading leader of the leftist parties.

PM Modi wrote, “Yechuri was known for his ability to maintain contact with all political parties. He also left his mark as an MP. My condolences are with his family and fans in this hour of grief.”

Family donated the body

CPIM’s student wing SFI wrote on the death of Sitaram Yechury, “Students Federation of India has lowered its banner in honor of its beloved and former president of SFI, CPIM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.”

According to news agency ANI, Yechury was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on August 19. He was first admitted to the emergency ward and then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit i.e. ICU.

CPI (M) said in a tweet that Yechury had an infection in the respiratory tract, which later took a serious form.

After Yechury’s death, the party flag at the CPI(M) office in Delhi was also hoisted at half-mast.

CPIM leader Hannan Mollah told ANI, “Sitaram Yechury is no more the general secretary of CPIM. He was admitted to AIIMS.”

In a press release issued by AIIMS, it has been told that 72-year-old Sitaram Yechury was admitted on 19 August 2024 due to pneumonia. He breathed his last at 3:05 pm on 12 September.

According to the press release, Yechury’s family has donated his body to AIIMS for teaching and research.

The CPI(M) has said that on September 14, between 11 am and 3 pm, Sitaram Yechury’s body will be kept at the party headquarters i.e. AK Gopalan Bhavan in New Delhi for the last darshan. After this, his body will be taken to AIIMS for medical research.

Sitaram Yechury was one of the big names in Indian politics. He was a member of the CPM’s Politburo for 32 years. He was the party’s general secretary since 2015. Sitaram Yechury was also a Rajya Sabha MP from 2005 to 2017.

Last month on August 22, while admitted to AIIMS, Yechury paid tribute to former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya in a video message.

He had said in his message, “It is very unfortunate that I have to express my feelings for Buddho da and say Lal Salaam from AIIMS itself.”
