New Delhi. Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to blame the previous governments for the rising prices, and to find a solution. Sonia Gandhi described the increase in petrol, diesel prices as profiteering and extortion.

Sonia said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is nothing short of extortion to cover economic mismanagement. As the dominant party in the opposition, I urge you to follow the Raj Dharma and partially lower the fuel prices to refund the excise duty.

The problem is that despite being in power for almost seven years, your government is blaming the previous regime for its own economic mismanagement. Domestic crude oil production fell to an 18-year low in 2020.

He said, I hope you agree that it is time for your government to focus on solutions instead of finding excuses. The country needs it.

He said that the price of crude oil was almost double during the tenure of the UPA government. He said, therefore, the work of raising prices by your government (for 12 consecutive days till 20 February) is like profiteering.

Sonia Gandhi said that she is writing this letter, understanding the pain of every citizen about the skyrocketing prices of fuel and gas as jobs, wages and household incomes are eroding everyday in India.

The middle class and the marginalized people of the society are struggling. These challenges are further complicated by inflation and the unprecedented rise in prices of almost all household items.

Gandhi accused the government of ignoring the suffering of the people. Petrol and diesel prices are at a historic high. Petrol price has crossed the Rs 100 per liter mark in many parts of the country. The rising price of diesel has added to the difficulties of millions of farmers. This is when the price of crude oil has increased marginally in the international market.
