Stock Market Holidays: Apart from some public holidays, the stock markets are closed every Saturday and Sunday. The stock markets were closed on Thursday on the occasion of Independence Day. On a weekly basis, the BSE Sensex rose 730.93 points or 0.91 percent in the week ended August 16, while the NSE Nifty jumped 173.65 points or 0.71 percent.

The festival of Rakshabandhan is on Monday, 19 August. If you are wondering whether there will be trading in the stock market on this festival of brother and sister, then the answer is yes. There is no holiday in the stock market on Rakshabandhan. BSE and NSE are going to open like other business days and traders can buy and sell shares even on the festival. Apart from Saturday and Sunday in the month of August, there is only one holiday in the stock market and that was on the occasion of Independence Day on 15 August.

In the rest of the month of August, the stock market will remain closed on Sunday, 18 August, Saturday, 24 August and Sunday, 25 August. Apart from some public holidays, the stock market remains closed every Saturday and Sunday.

This year, in the months after August, the stock market and multi commodity exchange will remain closed on holidays other than Saturday, Sunday, and the list of such holidays is as follows-

2 October: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti

1 November: Diwali-Lakshmi Pujan

15 November: Guru Nanak Jayanti

25 December: Christmas

Markets closed at 2-week high on Friday

On Friday, August 16, the Sensex closed at a two-week high of 80,436.84 with a jump of about 1,331 points. During trading, the Sensex at one time jumped 1,412.33 points or 1.78 percent to reach 80,518.21 points. Nifty also closed at a two-week high of 24,541.15, up 397 points. The reason for this was the rise in global markets due to reduced fears of recession in the US and buying in IT stocks in the local stock market.

Among Sensex companies, shares of Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, UltraTech Cement, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Technologies, ICICI Bank and Tata Steel closed with the highest gains. Among the 30 Sensex companies, only Sun Pharma declined.
