The cricket series between Pakistan and England is to start from July 8. In this, ODI and T20 matches are to be played.
The Pakistan cabinet on Tuesday turned down the offer of a contract with an Indian company for live telecast of the upcoming cricket series between Pakistan and England in their home country due to the prevailing political tensions. Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told the media after the cabinet meeting that Pakistan Television (PTV) had requested the government to sign an agreement with Star and Sony to broadcast the matches. “The cabinet has turned down PTV’s request for an agreement with Star and Sony for the telecast of the England-Pakistan cricket series,” Fawad said.
Fawad said that the Imran Khan government has already made it clear that relations with India will depend on reversing the action of August 5, 2019. He was talking about the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. “Our relations with India cannot be normalized until that action is withdrawn,” he said. Fawad said that Star and Sony have a monopoly on all cricket content in South Asia and the series will not be telecast in Pakistan unless an agreement is signed with the Indian company.
Series will start from 8th July
He, however, said the government was trying to find a middle ground by securing broadcast rights from the England and Wales Cricket Board and other foreign companies. He said that PTV and Pakistan Cricket Board will face financial loss due to the decision of the cabinet. At the same time, people have expressed their displeasure over this decision of the government. Many people expressed their protest through social media. Check out some of the tweets below-
