Chandigarh: Like Delhi, women of Punjab will also travel free in all government buses within the state from 1 April (Thursday), on Wednesday, the cabinet approved its formal approval on the scheme announced by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh earlier this month. . From 1 April, women of Punjab can travel free in all government buses of the state. The scheme was announced by the Chief Minister in the State Legislative Assembly on March 5 with an aim to empower women in the state. On 31 March, the state cabinet formally approved the scheme.

On micro-blogging site Twitter, CM Captain Amarinder Singh wrote that it is a pleasure to share that our CABINET has approved free travel within the state for all women / girls of Punjab in state transport buses from 1 April. I am sure this will be a strong step towards further empowering the women of Punjab.

Can travel free in these buses
Women can avail this scheme in government-run buses including the City Bus Service operated by the Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC), Punjab Roadways Buses (PUNBUS) and the Department of Local Bodies. However, this scheme cannot be availed in government operated AC, Volvo and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) buses.
These women / girls will get benefit
A spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said that Aadhaar card, voter identity card or other documents related to proving a resident of Punjab to take advantage of this scheme is acceptable.
1.31 crore women / girls will get benefits
The scheme related to it was approved in the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. This scheme will benefit 1.31 crore women / girls of the state. According to the 2011 census, Punjab has a total population of 2.77 crore, of which 1,46,39,465 are males and 1,31,03,873 are females.
