The irrigation department of Uttar Pradesh has also become alert about the water disaster caused by the glacier bursting in Chamoli in Uttarakhand. Engineers are deployed for 24 hours in the control room of the department. Department engineer and UP Engineers Association general secretary Ashish Yadav said that about one and a half lakh cusecs of water from Haridwar on Sunday night are expected to come up in the Ganges river in UP.
He said that about six and a half lakh cusecs of water had passed from Haridwar to UP at the time of Kedarnath tragedy. Ashish Yadav said that since the irrigation department has already done a proper cleaning of all the canals coming out of the river Ganga. Therefore, the water level in the Ganges river is not expected to increase very much in UP, yes it is sure that there may be some speed in the flow of Ganga.
He told that if more water does not come in the down stream of Ganga, then there is very little chance of any untoward happening in the state. On the instructions of the government, the gates of Narora and Bijnor barrages of Aligarh have been opened and the engineers of the department are constantly monitoring these two barrages. He said that the population around these two barrages has also been alerted and wherever there is any obstruction in the flow of Ganga, it is being removed.
