While making Voter ID card, Aadhar card is asked from every person. Many times a person is deprived of voting due to non-availability of Aadhar card. But now the Election Commission will soon issue a new notification making changes in this rule.

Aadhar Not Mandatory For Voter Card: Whenever a person goes to make a voter identity card, the first thing he is asked for is Aadhar card. If a person does not have an Aadhar card, he has to face a lot of difficulty in making the voting paper. However, now people have got the solution to this problem because the Election Commission has informed the Supreme Court that now Aadhar card will not be required to make voter ID card. On September 21, a bench of Justice Chandrachud, Justice JB Pastor and Justice Manoj Mishra heard a case in which a petition was filed to abolish the requirement of giving Aadhaar number while making an identity card.

In this regard, the Election Commission has said that soon the requirement of filling Aadhaar number for making Voter ID card will be abolished. Notification will be issued for this. Changes will be made in the registration form of voters. An undertaking has also been submitted by the Commission in the Supreme Court, after which the matter was settled.

What was the petition

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking clarification in the provisions for making voter ID cards under Section 26 of the Electors Amendment Act 2022. Where was it mentioned that Form 6 exists for making identity card and the identity of the voter can be ensured through Form 6b. Even after this, the rule of filling Aadhaar number has been made mandatory. In such a situation, if a person does not have an Aadhar card, then despite being of voting age, he is not able to get his voter ID card made and remains deprived of voting. A hearing on this was held in the Supreme Court.

What does the Election Commission say?

When a reply was sought from the Election Commission in this regard, it was informed by the Commission that the requirement of filling Aadhaar number in making Voter ID card will soon be abolished. A notification will be issued in this regard. The Commission has also presented a figure, which states that approximately 66 crore 23 lakh Aadhaar numbers have been uploaded in the voter list and are currently being processed.

It was also told that in the existing rules, Aadhaar number has been made mandatory for making Voter ID and ensuring the identity of the voter, but soon the rule will be changed by issuing a notification and the form will also be amended. After a satisfactory reply received from the Commission, the matter was settled by a bench of judges of the Supreme Court.
