But now digital payments can also be made through WhatsApp. The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), the organization that operates and controls the transactions in the retail sector in India, has now allowed WhatsApp to provide digital payment facility to all its users in the country. The facility of making digital payments through WhatsApp was started 4 years ago, but it had a limit. Earlier only 10 crore users of WhatsApp could take advantage of it. But now all its users can send and receive money from WhatsApp itself. This facility has started from January 1, 2025.
PhonePe is leading the market of companies providing digital payment facilities with a 48 percent share. After this comes Google Pay which has 37 percent market control.
How can you use WhatsApp Pay?
For this, you have to click on the share file icon during the chat and then select the payment option. If the contact to whom you want to send money on WhatsApp has enabled WhatsApp Pay, then after this the option of Pay or Request will come. By clicking on these you will be able to send money or take money from someone.
Who is ahead in the digital payment market?
WhatsApp Pay is an integrated payment feature powered by UPI. Meta, the company that runs WhatsApp, launched it in India in February 2018. Initially, it was tested with 10 lakh users. Two years later, in February 2020, NPCI allowed WhatsApp to use it among its users. But their number was limited to 10 crore. Now this limit has been removed.
PhonePe is leading the market of companies providing digital payment facilities, with a 48 percent share. It is followed by Google Pay, which controls 37 percent of the market. But the number of WhatsApp users is 50 crore, which is very large and hence WhatsApp can go far ahead in the digital payment market.
