Get ready for another linking. Government of India is going to link your driving license and Aadhar card. Aadhaar is already necessary to take advantage of ITR, PAN card and many government schemes. The government will make a new law regarding this.
Central Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said, ‘We are soon bringing such a law, under which linking driving license with Aadhaar card will be mandatory.’
Why does the government want to link DL and Aadhaar?
The reasoning of the government for linking the driving license with the Aadhar card is that one can run away by accident, get a duplicate license made and escape from such punishment, but after linking, no one can escape. After linking, you can change your name but not your biometric details. You can neither change the iris nor the fingerprints. Whenever you go to apply for a driving license for the second time, it will be known through the system that you already have a license and you will not be issued a license again.
Earlier in August 2018, the central government said that it is no longer necessary to carry a driving license and other documents to drive a vehicle. Instead, you can show documents from Digilocker or mTransport app, which will be valid. On 26 September 2018, the Supreme Court had refused to consider Aadhaar as necessary for many things including bank accounts, mobile numbers, but there has been debate about the essentiality of Aadhaar.
